Surrounded by the bars and ballgames of Enron Field, the clubs and nightlife of the Main Street, the busting office buildings of the CBD, and the courthouses and jails of the Justice Center complex, Christ Church is a little slice of Heaven amid a sea of debauchery. A great example of this oasis can be seen on the San Jacinto side of the building. There is a tropical courtyard hemmed in by brick walls and wrought iron. An inviting refuge from the heat, dust, and bustle of the city. This isn’t the first church to stand on this ground. The original was erected in 1839, but was replaced by this structure six decades later. For those who aspire to becoming an architect, this may provide inspiration. Silas McBee was an amateur architect who put this building together as an homage to Saint Luke’s church in Isle of Wight County, Virginia where many of the Christ Church parishioners came from.
